Relationship Anxiety

For men who can't switch off the worry, the doubts or the overthinking, even when the relationship is going well.

Loving someone shouldn't feel this tense.

Relationship anxiety can make a good relationship feel like a test you might fail at any moment. You might worry she'll lose interest, question whether you're right for each other, or feel a wave of panic at the thought of the next step, and then feel guilty for thinking that way at all.

I'm Aditya Kumar, a counselling psychologist. I work with men to understand where this anxiety comes from, quieten the overthinking, and feel calmer and more present in their relationships. This is part of my relationship work with men.

Does this sound like you?

Waiting for it to go wrong

Even when things are good, there's a sense that something bad is coming.

Overanalysing everything

Replaying conversations, reading into her tone, or rehearsing what to say for hours.

Pulled close, then pushing away

Wanting closeness, then feeling suffocated or trapped once you have it.

"Is she the right one?"

Doubts that keep coming back, even about a relationship you value, and the guilt of having them.

Needing to feel sure

Seeking constant reassurance, or feeling uneasy until you know exactly where you stand.

Avoiding commitment

Steering away from the next step, such as moving in, engagement or marriage, without quite knowing why.

What we work on

  • Untangling thoughts: separating anxious "what ifs" from real concerns
  • Calming the body: somatic and DBT tools for when worry spikes
  • Attachment patterns: how past relationships shape how you love now
  • Reassurance loops: building security that doesn't depend on constant checking
  • Commitment fears: making decisions from clarity, not panic

Anxiety often follows what matters

The more a relationship means to you, the more your mind may try to protect you by scanning for danger. That doesn't make the relationship wrong; it means your anxiety needs attention.

If the worry shows up as jealousy or suspicion, see trust & jealousy. If it's about an upcoming marriage, see pre-marriage counselling. The free BAPS Loop self-check can also help you spot your anxiety patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is relationship anxiety?
It's ongoing worry, doubt or fear about your relationship: whether it will last, whether your partner really cares, or whether it's right for you. It can show up even in healthy, loving relationships.
Does relationship anxiety mean I'm with the wrong person?
Not necessarily. Anxiety often attaches itself to the things that matter most to us. Counselling helps you tell the difference between anxious thoughts and genuine concerns, so you can see the relationship more clearly.
Where does it come from?
Often from earlier experiences of relationships and attachment, such as inconsistent care, a painful breakup, or growing up around conflict. It can also be part of a wider pattern of anxiety and overthinking.
Can you help with fear of commitment?
Yes. We look at what commitment brings up for you, such as fear of losing freedom, of getting it wrong, or of being hurt, and work through it at your pace.
Does my partner need to attend?
No. These are individual sessions with just you.
Are sessions online or in Bangalore?
Both: in person in Bangalore and online across India. Fees, including a student sliding scale, are on the booking page. See current fees →

Note: If anxiety becomes overwhelming or you're having thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out now: call Tele-MANAS on 14416 (free, 24/7) or emergency services on 112. Counselling is not a substitute for crisis support.
